I have finally put my skincare routine to paper. Unlike Olivia’s skin, my skin is extremely dry, and although we do have a slight cross-over in skincare products, our skincare needs are dramatically different. There are millions and millions of skincare products out on the market, it can be so confusing and hard to decide what exactly you need. I like to keep my skincare routine fairly simple and consistent as possible. Five steps max!
1. Cleanse
2. Exfoliant or Retinoid (I count this as one because I switch between the two, I would not use both of these on the same day)
3. Serum
4. Moisturize
5. Sunscreen
My skincare staples & non-negotiable in my routine are exfoliants or retinoids, sunscreen, and vitamin C. They are in my skincare routine every day and here’s why. Retinoid is in the class of vitamin A derived ingredients that include retinol, which is a milder version of Retin-A. I have sensitive skin and can’t tolerate Retin-A but I can use retinol, which helps increase new cell turnover and activates natural collagen production, leaving my skin firmer brighter. Antioxidant Vitamin C penetrates your skin, increasing the production of collagen. Collagen production is the most important factor in keeping our skin in its best shape, it helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and brightens our skin tone. Before I put on my makeup I use sunscreen on my face, neck, chest, and sometimes hands. If you are not using sunscreen you might as well throw all your skincare in the trash. Seriously!
Because I work at Bluemercury I am privileged to test so many different products. It is one of the best parts of my job. Here are a few of my very favorite anti-aging skincare products and my skincare routine.
Two times a week I use M-61 PowerGlow Peel Pads, to exfoliate my skin. This 1-minute, 1-step exfoliating peel resurfaces, clarifies, and helps to firm the skin for a radiant, renewed glow. Glycolic and salicylic acid help to improve the skin’s tone, texture, and clarity reduce pore size and fine lines, while chamomile and lavender calm and soothe the skin.
To cleanse my face, I reach for the ever-reliable La Mer Cleansing Oil, which I love because it leaves my complexion hydrated and clean. This detoxifying oil removes impurities and make-up without stripping my dry skin. It's infused with the iconic Miracle Broth, Deconstructed Thermal Water, and Tourmaline. It helps protect my epidermal barrier and decrease any redness and inflammation.
After doing a thorough cleanse, I apply a cult favorite and go-to antioxidant serum: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic. This is where Olivia and I crossover in our routines and are equally OBSESSED. I use it on my face every morning as it contains a powerful punch of antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid. I like to think of it as a shield covering my face from all the harmful elements. It combats sun damage, decreases hyperpigmentation, and gives my skin a beautiful glow. A true staple of mine. Slight warning the smell is not great but if you can get past the smell you will love the way it makes your skin feel and look.
Once I’ve applied my serum I apply my moisturizer. During the day I use Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Rich, as it keeps my complexion hydrated all day long. After I applied my moisturizer I apply an eye cream. I have tried all of them and I can say without a doubt, Natura Bisse Diamond Extreme Eye cream is the BEST out there. I love the lusciously rich formula with optical diffusers that reflect light away to illuminate the eye area.
The last step before make-up is sunscreen. I have not been loyal to one sunscreen. Right now I am using Supergoops Glowscreen SPF40. It is a lightweight, pearlescent sunscreen that hydrates the skin while acting as a makeup-gripping primer. I also love that this sunscreen doubles as a highlighter. What are some of your favorite sunscreens.
My Night-time routine is very similar.
Three-four nights a week (and not on the days, I use the M-61 PowerGlow Peel Pads) I reach for my Darphin Ideal Resource Youth Retiol Oil. This light-textured, ultra-hydrating anti-aging fluid with retinol renews and smoothes my skin, while visibly minimizing expression lines and wrinkles. The results leave my skin feeling revitalized and supple.
I follow with Natura Bisse Diamond Extreme Moisturizer. I have a love-hate relationship with this product. I love the way it makes my skin look and feel. There is nothing on the market like it but I hate how much it costs! I break it out to a weekly cost so I can justify the price. I try to make it last 5-6 months. A little goes a long way. This moisturizer targets extreme dryness and softens the signs of aging. Your skin gains optimal hydration in a single application.
I’m on the hunt for an amazing neck cream. To date, I have not found anything that has wow’ed me. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. And lastly, my go-to lip treatment is the same as Olivia’s, The LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask. It has an exclusive moisture wrap technology with hyaluronic acid to form a protective barrier over your lips and locks in moisture.
From my vanity to yours, I hope you learned a little something new from our list of favorites!
