2020 was a year of everything. It was a year of loss, a year of fear, a year of confusion, and a year of the unknown. Despite all those things, it was also a year of growth, a year of learning, a year of quiet moments of joy, and a year of reflection. It can be really easy to look back on 2020 and want to erase it from our memories (trust me, we know), but it's so important to look back and learn from what we experience. One of our favorite things to say to each other is "fail forward." Cliche, but so good! 2020 can feel like a complete and utter fail in so many aspects, but each and every failure leads to something that catapults us onto being better versions of ourselves. We decided to each reflect on 10 lessons we learned in this crazy crazy year and utilize them to push us forward to joy, love, peace, kindness, and growth in 2021.
1. God's plan is always perfect
God has great plans for your life. Trust him.
God's timing is perfect and so is his plan for us. It does not mean we are going to have an easy or perfect life. It has taken me a long time to learn this but once it clicked, life became so much easier. I have learned not to fret or worry much, but trust Him to take care of my life. King Solomon tells us in Proverbs 3:6 about acknowledging God "In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths". One of my very favorite verses. 2. Time with family is never wasted. 3. True happiness is found in relationships and not things. 4. Hold on to things and plans loosely. Open hands. 5. Listen more. Everyone has a story. 6. Tell the truth (or at least don't lie). 7. Forgive - It is much easier than holding on to the pain 8. Cake is always a good idea. Indulge a little 9. Celebrate even the smallest moments. 10. End each day with reflection and the Lord.
11. Laugh as much as possible.
12. Family is there for you. Regardless.
13. Life is full of ups and downs -- both are equally important to experience.
14. Showing emotions isn't a bad thing. It's ok to be sad!
15. Give God control of each and every situation. He's God & I'm not.
16. Cherish the good people in your life! Friends are a blessing from above.
17. Give yourself (& others) more grace for mistakes and stumbles.
18. Long walks and pretty sunsets are chicken soup for the soul.
19. Kindness is key.
20. God welcomes you back each and every time you turn back to him.
